While material of comparable albedo is found on During Galileo’s G7 orbit, the Solid State Imaging (SSI) Ganymede and Callisto, low-albedo europan materials are camera acquired pictures of the spacecraft shadow point on much redder. All europan surface materials exhibit an opposiEuropa’s surface as well as a comparison set of images showing tion effect; however, the strength of the effect, as measured by the same geographic region at phase angle a 5 58. Coverage, the total increase in reflectance as phase angle decreases from obtained at three spectral bandpasses (VLT, 0.41 mm, GRN, a 5 58 to a 5 08, varies among terrains. The opposition effects 0.56 mm; and 1MC, 0.99 mm) at a spatial resolution of 404 m/ of IR-bright icy and IR-dark icy materials which dominate pixel, shows a 162 3 220-km region of Europa’s surface located Europa’s surface are about 1.5 times larger than predicted from at 308N, 1628W. We have used these images to measure the pre-Galileo studies. Low-albedo materials in dark spots exhibit near-opposition spectrophotometric behavior of four primary unusually intense opposition effects (up to four times larger europan terrain materials: IR-bright icy material, IR-dark icy than bright icy europan terrains), consistent with the presence material, dark lineament material, and dark spot material. The of a strong shadow-hiding opposition surge. The strengths of high spatial resolution of the G7 images reveal low-albedo materials in dark spots that are among the darkest features the opposition surges among average europan terrains system-

Electromagnetic Induction from Europa’s Ocean and the Deep Interior

An overview of the current status of research on the electromagnetic induction sounding of Europa’s ocean and deep interior is provided. After briefly reviewing the history of electromagnetic induction methods used for sounding the interiors of Earth and the Moon, we provide a basic theoretical foundation of electromagnetic wave theory for spherical bodies. Next, evidence of electromagnetic ind...

Estimates of Europa’s Ice Shell Thickness from Elastically-supported Topography

The thickness of Europa’s solid ice shell is uncertain, and has important implications for Europa’s habitability and thermal history. Here we obtain an estimate for the ice shell thickness from observations of a plateau SW of Cilix impact crater (3◦N, 182◦W ). A shell thickness of ≈ 25 km is compatible with our observations; a conservative lower bound is 6 km. Fig 1 shows a Galileo image of the...

Europa’s Surface Properties from Small Craters

Introduction. Observations of Europa’s small craters (both primary and secondary), their morphologies, and their relationships with both the underlying and surrounding terrain provide information regarding the surfaceand near-surface properties of Europa’s icy crust. These observations reveal variations in strength between different terrain types, which may reflect variations in ice-structure a...

Magnetospheric ion sputtering and water ice grain size at Europa

We present the first calculation of Europa’s sputtering (ion erosion) rate as a function of position on Europa’s surface. We find a global sputtering rate of 2 10 H2O s , some of which leaves the surface in the form of O2 and H2. The calculated O2 production rate is 1 10 O2 s , H2 production is twice that value. The total sputtering rate (including all species) peaks at the trailing hemisphere ...
